LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN AND THE KEVERICHS FROM KÖWERICH
At the Geschwister Köwerich winery, history and future merge in a very special way. The famous Mosel Riesling is cultivated here – a wine that tells the stories and traditions of the region with every vine. But what does Beethoven, the world-famous composer, have to do with this winery? To understand that, you have to delve deep into history.

The STory
The Köwerich family has lived in the village of the same name for over 300 years, where they once played a leading role. The Köwerichs, formerly spelled “Keverichs”, were in the service of the Trier bishops and electors for many generations, managing their vineyards and fields and thus contributing to the development of the region.
Due to their close connection to the electoral court, they also managed to work at the court of the elector. Both Maria Magdalena Keverich’s grandfather and father worked at the court of the Trier elector. Her father had an astonishing career as chief court cook in Koblenz.
After the death of her first husband, Maria Magdalena met the Bonn tenor Johann van Beethoven, who was in the service of the Cologne elector. They married in 1767. Ludwig van Beethoven was born from this marriage. Nobody suspected back then that he would one day inspire the whole world with his music and be an incentive for a Moselle winery to produce first-class white wines.
This historical connection led to the image of Ludwig van Beethoven becoming the trademark of the winery over time – on the one hand, shaped by the pride of having such a famous ancestor, and on the other hand by the awareness of doing justice to the great artist with first-class wine quality.
The last descendants of this family were the Köwerich siblings. In honor of them and the tradition, we still run the winery under this name today.
